Celtic have played Valencia twice before. The first was in the old Inter Cities Fairs Cup, a 4-2 defeat in Spain and a 2-2 draw at Celtic Park saw Valencia progress to the next round. Although it is commonly regarded as Celtic first time playing in Europe, this competition is pre-UEFA, is not recognised by UEFA and matches played in the ICFC are not counted as being part of Celtic's European appearance record. The only other time that the two clubs have played each other was in 2001 when Martin O'Neill's team was beaten 4-5 in a Celtic Park penalty shootout after a 1-0 win at home for each team. Valencia were managed by Rafa Benitez.
