He made his debut for Celtic in a League Cup tie at Celtic Park against Clyde FC on August 23 1958. Billy played for 17 seasons, making a record 790 appearances for Celtic and was the Captain of the famous Lisbon Lions that won the European Cup in 1967. As well as winning the European Cup, he won nine league championships (in a row), seven Scottish Cups and six League Cups. He retired from playing after winning the Scottish Cup Final against Airdrie in 1975. He returned to Celtic as Manager (twice) and won another four league titles, three Scottish Cups and a League Cup, including a League and Cup Double in the clubs' centenary season of 1987/88.
