Comments: Billy McNeill retired from
playing after the Scottish Cup Final vs Airdrie at the end of this season. He made his
debut for Celtic in a League Cup tie at Celtic Park against Clyde
FC on August 23 1958. Billy played for 17 seasons, making a record
790 appearances for Celtic and was the Captain of the famous
Lisbon Lions that won the European Cup in 1967. As well as winning
the European Cup, he won nine league championships (in a row),
seven Scottish Cups and six League Cups. He retired from playing
after winning the Scottish Cup Final against Airdrie in 1975.
He returned to Celtic as Manager (twice) and won another four
league titles, three Scottish Cups and a League Cup, including
a League and Cup Double in the clubs' centenary season of 1987/88.
