Davie Provan arrived from Kilmarnock for a Scottish record fee of £120,000 on Sept 18. He went on to win 4 League titles, 2 Scottish Cups and a League Cup with Celtic in the next 7 seasons. He was the Scottish Professional Football Association's Player of the year for 1979/80. He won 10 caps for Scotland and was a member of the 1982 World Cup squad in Spain.

This defeat ended a run of 153 successive League Cup games (this cup tie would have been 154) without being eliminated from the competition, The run stretched from the 1964/65 season until this match and includes a World record 14 League Cup Finals in a row (6 as winners - 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1975).
