Austria Series Match 2
Gerhard Hanappi Stadium, Hütteldorf, Vienna
1-1 - Pukki

Teemu Pukki scored for Celtic in a 1-1 draw with Rapid Vienna in the second match of their series of pre-season friendlies in Austria. Virgil van Dijk scored an o.g. that gave the Austrians a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute when he glanced a header past Lukasz Zaluska in the Celtic goal. Why Celtic agreed to play this lot is a mystery to us. Unless we are forced to play them again by being drawn against them in European competiton we shouldn't even acknowledge that they exist. If anyone wants to argue that then you should point to how they conned us out of Europe in 1984.

Celtic lost their opening match of the Maspalomas Cup in Gran Canaria 1-0 to PSV Eindhoven. The only goal of game was scored in the 33rd minute by Dutch World Cup star Memphis Depay. Celtic manager Ronny Deila gave big team debuts to development squad starlets Aiden Nesbitt and Joe Thomson but saw his captain injured with a head knock and taken off for his own safety along with John Guidetti who received a heavy knock. Joe Thomson's first goal for the big team. Debut for Paul McMullan.

No programme issued.

Ronny Deila rested most of his first eleven for Celtic's final match in the Torneo Internacional de Fútbol de Maspalomas in Gran Canaria. Leigh Griffiths was given a start and managed to put Celtic one up in the first minute of the game but it was all downhill from there. Sparta scored three times before half-time, including a penalty in the last minute of the half. The manager brought on Nir Bitton and Efe Ambrose at half-time to add some experience to the team and it helped. Celtic got back into the match and 17 year old Joe Thomson gave the Hoops some hope with a fine shot and goal from outside the penalty box. The match ended 2-3 to Sparta and Celtic's first time at the Maspalomas Cup ended without a win.

Inaugural Algarve Challenge Cup featuring Cardiff City FC, Celtic FC, Middlesbrough FC and Vitoria de Guimaraes. Held in the Estádio Algarve.
The tournament was a modified league system where teams get 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. In addition to this a point is awarded for every goal scored. This, they hope, will promote attacking football. So a 3-3 draw would get a team the same number of points as a 1-0 victory.

The Tampa Bay Mutiny exhibition game was held in the University of Tampa's Pepin-Rood Stadium on Friday, January 19, 2001. Columbian legend Carlos Valderrama played for Tampa in this match. This was the first match that Neil Lennon and Paul Lambert played together in Celtic's midfield.

A double-sided, single page Roster Card (team sheet) was produced for this match with squad names on one side and the Mutinys' fixture list on the other. Watch out for forgeries of this roster card printed on UK A4 paper - an authentic one will be printed on US A4 paper which is slightly smaller than UK A4 size paper.
