Celtic FC in European Competitions

Celtic FC in UEFA European Competition

As far as supporters are conerned Celtic's first European tie was played against Valencia C.F. in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup back in 1962. Technically, as UEFA does not recognise this tournament, the famous hOOPs strip did not actually grace the European scene until the 1963/64 season when they played our old friends FC Basle of Switzerland in the first round of the now defunct European Cup Winners Cup. This part of the site has info on every single game including the match programme, match ticket and more.

History

Read Tom McGouran's history of Celtic FC match programmes.

Celtic did not publish a match programme until 1946. Older programmes exist but these were the work of private companies. The first official programme publish by the Club was for a 2-2 draw against Clyde at Celtic Park on the 14th of December 1946.

Tom McGouran is a Celtic supporter, collector and the author of two books related to collecting Celtic matchday programmes that were an absolute must for collectors in the days before the Internet. Yes the world did exist before the WWW.

Celtic in North America

UEFA Cup Final 2003

In season 2002/2003 Martin O'God's Celtic team went all the way to the final of the UEFA Cup. On the way they beat English opponents in Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool. Before the Blackburn game, manager Graeme Souness claimed that it would be "men against boys". It was but they were the boys as the hOOps beat them 3-0 on aggregate. Liverpool were beaten 3-1 in the quarter-final but before that they went to Spain and Germany to put Celta Vigo and Stuttgart to the sword. In the semi-final against Boavista Oporto, a Henrik Larsonn goal in Glasgow and another in Porto was enough to beat the city rivals of our opponents in the final.

European Cup Final 1967

During the 1966/67 season Celtic won every competition that they entered. They won the Glasgow Cup, the Scottish League Cup, the Scottish F.A. Cup, the Scottish League and were the first non-Latin team to win the European Cup. With that glorious win in Lisbon on May 25 1967 Celtic became the first club ever to win their National Championship, their National Cup and the European Cup.  This European Cup victory is the greatest feat ever by a British team in Europe and paved the way for other British victories. No big money buys were involved in the winning Celtic team, every player was Scottish and every one born within a 30 miles radius of Celtic Park.
